Bio/Abstract

Abstract: In this interactive workshop, Tristan Harris and Kayla Bordelon share an approach to creating personal stories about fire for use in educational contexts. Bordelon suggests that storytelling in science education is efficient, integrative and has the potential to expand the cultural norms of science education spaces. Bordelon advocates for the facilitation of student/audience storytelling, in addition to the use of personal stories by educators and scientists. Harris guides the participants through the process of constructing a short first-person story about their personal connections to fire. The group then shares a few stories and discusses the challenges and opportunities of creating vulnerable spaces within science learning contexts. Harris offers tips and resources for facilitating storytelling with students and public audiences in Idaho
